A Second Honeymoon

The Weight-Loss Skill: Using PointsPlus™ to put power behind weight-loss efforts and New Year’s resolutions

The Challenge: Each year, we make promises that often fizzle quickly. That’s usually because we lack an action plan and the tools to follow through; we set goals that are too high and get discouraged when we don’t see swift progress.

The Solution: In this meeting, we will learn how starting the new year with a brand-new program will help us achieve even greater weight-loss success. We’ll also discuss ways to set realistic, measurable goals (Winning Outcomes) and formulate a step-by-step action plan (Storyboarding) for achieving them.

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Eating more 0 PointsPlus™ value fruits (in moderation) and vegetables for greater weight-loss progress.

The Weight-Loss Skill:   Using the new Weekly PointsPlus Allowance and other Program features to stay on track

Play It Again, Sam

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Learn From Experience so you can be more successful going forward

The Challenge:   Spanish philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This is especially true when it comes to Thanksgiving. We may repeat the same actions year after year without pausing to recognize which help and which hinder our weight-loss efforts. What’s more, we often view less-helpful actions as failures, making success feel out of reach and obscuring the lessons that would make us more successful.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will learn that past experience offers a window to future success. And because Thanksgiving meals are so consistent from year to year, it’s easy to plan ahead of time. Looking at past successes gives us a cheat sheet of actions that can be repeated for Thanksgiving dinner and future holidays. Looking at past struggles helps us zero in on the adjustments that need to be made to ensure future success.

Managing Stress

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Managing stress to stay in control on Thanksgiving and beyond

The Challenge:  Thanksgiving can test our ability to take care of ourselves and to stay in control and on plan. And we’re not talking just about resisting the Apple Brown Betty. Visiting family and friends often cause stress, prompting some of us to hit the leftovers hard.

The Solution:  In this meeting we will learn that while eating and exercise are critical components of losing weight, thinking patterns play a role as well. We will explore ways to manage our thinking patterns to avoid letting stress sabotage our weight-loss efforts.

Your Thanksgiving Toolbox

The Weight-Loss Skill: Staying in control and making healthy choices during holiday meals

The Challenge:  Thanksgiving is all about food—turkey, gravy, yams, and pie—and many people use it as an excuse to overeat. Overindulging is not only acceptable on this holiday, but often encouraged. What’s more, families usually serve up once-a-year high POINTS® value specialties that we may find hard to resist.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will learn to successfully navigate the Thanksgiving holiday menu.  We’ll determine in advance which foods we’ll eat and calculate the POINTS values of those foods.  We’ll discuss resources for finding POINTS value friendly recipes, learn how to calculate the POINTS values for favorite family recipes, and plan not just how much we’ll eat but also when and how often. This preparation will make us feel in control at the holiday table so we can stay on track amid the gluttony that surrounds us.

Master Your Metabolism

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Understanding how your metabolism works so you can make the most of it

The Challenge:  As a Leader, I’ve heard members make such statements as “I have a slow metabolism,” “My body is in starvation mode,” and “I can’t lose weight because I’m too old.” When we believe these statements, which are inaccurate, it can create confusion and affect our food choices and self-confidence.  It can also give us a built-in excuse for lack of progress and even failure.

The Solution:   In this meeting, we will gain an understanding of how metabolism really works and what we can do to rev it up. Armed with this knowledge, we will be more likely to accept responsibility for our weight-loss efforts and feel more confident in our ability to succeed on the Momentum® plan.

Trick or Treat!

The Weight-Loss Skill: Learning strategies for managing a sweet tooth during Halloween and beyond

The Challenge: Forget the haunted house; the spookiest part of Halloween is the candy fest.  Stores push high-calorie, high-sugar candy (like that 5-pound bag of fun-size chocolate bars), some of which appears exclusively at this time of year (candy corn, anyone?). Many of us, especially the sweets lovers among us, find it nearly impossible to stay on plan with mounds of candy in every corner. What’s more, for some, eating candy may trigger hankerings for sugar that linger long after the ghosts and goblins are stowed away till next year.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will learn strategies for managing sweet temptations during the Halloween season and beyond. We will share ideas about how to enjoy treats in moderation and how to plan for small indulgences in order to stay on track. We will also come to recognize that not all treats are alike and that we can make healthier choices and continue to lose weight. (We can have our fruit and eat it too!)

Halloween starts the Party Season and it’s time to start thinking about what the plan is to enjoy the good times without ending up feeling guilty and defeated come January.

There are 10 weeks to go before January 1st, isn’t that scary? Make sure to come to your meeting whenever you can during those 10 weeks. It’s the key to staying on track!

Celebrate Success

The Weight-Loss Skill: Celebrating and drawing inspiration from successes achieved during Lose For Good®

The Challenge:  People who struggle with their weight often have difficulty acknowledging and accepting their weight-loss achievements. That may be in part because of self-doubt: We, as members, may be haunted by failed weight-loss attempts and believe that this attempt, too, could easily fail—so why celebrate it? We may also downplay the significance of smaller increments of weight loss, overlooking the fact that every pound (or fraction of a pound) lost brings us closer to our ultimate weight goal and merits acknowledgment.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will help each other acknowledge and celebrate the weight-loss goals we’ve achieved during the Lose For Good® challenge. We’ll also emphasize the positive impact of those achievements on the community, which further reinforces the value of our weight-loss efforts.  Learning to acknowledge and celebrate success will help boost our confidence in our ability to lose weight and our motivation to stay on track.

Make It Easier: Try Something New

The Weight-Loss Skill: Overcoming trickier elements of the plan by using Weight Watchers tools and resources.

The Challenge:  We often talk about how hard it is to lose weight: "Weight loss takes too much time."  "It can be hard to socialize on the plan."  "I’m not good at recognizing portions and calculating POINTS® values." We tend to generalize, believing the entire process is challenging, when in fact it’s usually only a few specific aspects of the process that pose a challenge.

The Solution:   In this meeting, we will identify the trickier elements of staying on plan and will explore the Weight Watchers tools that make it easier. The meeting will give us the opportunity to gripe briefly about what makes weight loss hardest for us! Venting will help validate our feelings (we’re not alone!) and serve as a springboard for finding solutions, including sharing fellow members’ tips and tricks and discovering the Weight Watchers tools that can support our efforts.

Get Wise About SIZE

The Weight-Loss Skill: Downsizing portions to supersize weight loss without going hungry.

The Challenge:   Bigger houses, bigger cars, bigger TVs. In today’s world we’re conditioned to think that bigger is better and that more will make us happy. So it’s not surprising that the same holds true for food and eating: Restaurant meals are two to five times larger than they were in the 1970s* and can be two or even three times a standard portion size. Fast-food menu choices may be supersized at bargain prices.  Yes, things are bigger, all right: As we’ve upsized our portions, we’ve also upsized our pants and dresses.  And we may be so used to eating so much food that we have no idea what an appropriate—or satisfying—portion truly is. Downsize our portions? Why, that can make us feel cheated. Yet portion control is a key strategy for weight-loss success over the long term.
* Portion Distortion

The Solution:   In today’s meeting, we will use the inspiring example of the Salwen family as a basis for asking the central question, What could we get out of eating half our usual portion sizes? We will share strategies for eating half, or at least less than our typical amounts, without going hungry. We will also discuss the benefits of portion control, which go beyond boosting weight loss to building feelings of empowerment and self-confidence.

Outsmart the Supermarket

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Shopping for weight-loss success at the supermarket

The Challenge:  The supermarket can be a source of inspiration or perspiration. The perspiration comes from temptations: shelves of cookies, chips, and ice cream, free samples; candy at the checkout. What’s worse, the store is laid out in such a way as to encourage shoppers to spend—not just their money but, for Weight Watchers® members, also their POINTS® values.

The Solution:  In this meeting, members will learn to find inspiration in the grocery store aisles—in the form of nutritious foods that make satisfying, enjoyable, healthy meals and snacks. They will share strategies for avoiding supermarket temptations and for stocking up on healthy, tasty foods that they can look forward to eating.

Ask For Help

The Weight-Loss Skill :  Asking for help from others to enhance your weight-loss efforts

The Challenge:  Although having the support of the people in our lives can make a big difference in our weight-loss success, members often find it difficult to ask for help. For starters, they may not realize that they need help. Even if they do, they may not know what type of help would be most beneficial or who’s the best person to provide it. They may also be concerned that they’re being selfish or fear that people will say no. It’s also possible that members have gotten the wrong kind of help in the past, making them hesitant to ask again.

The Solution:  In this meeting, members will explore the types of help that would be most beneficial, to whom they might turn for that help, and how to go about asking for it.

Visualize Weight-Loss Success

The Weight Loss Skill:   Appreciating the significance of small weight losses to stay motivated and on track.

The Challenge:  We often get frustrated seeing only small weight losses week after week.   Feelings of frustration may trigger self-criticism and negative self-talk, which can limit success.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will use visualization to appreciate the significance of even the smallest weight losses: They add up to spectacular weight loss over time! We will also recognize the power of Positive Self-Talking.  Speaking to ourselves kindly and offering ourselves positive messages about our continued weight-loss efforts keeps us motivated to continue toward our goals.

Lose for Good

The Weight-Loss Skill: Recharging your weight-loss efforts by helping people in need

The Challenge:  Labor Day weekend may include barbecues, picnics, and/or vacations, with all the potential for indulgence that those occasions invite; the cooler weather of fall heralds a menu shift toward comfort food; and football season can mean parties with tempting snacks. Together, these events make it tough to stay motivated and on track. At the same time, there are millions of people in our country and around the world who don’t have enough food to feed their families.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will get a new source of motivation with the kickoff of the third annual Lose For Good® campaign. Knowing that our weight-loss success can translate directly into help for others in our community and around the world may be just the motivation we need to refocus on the program and get back on track to our Weight Goal.

Tools of the Week:

Electronics (scale, pedometer, POINTS® Clicker, calculator)

Keep your scale out!  Out of sight is out of mind!  Mine is right underneath the cupboard with my plates...the plate automatically goes on the scale when I take it out of the cabinet!  This scale weighs IN POINTS as well as ounces and grams...it's great to see that my chicken is 3 points...

Just the other day, I wore my pedometer to see how many steps were in the walk I was about to take.  At the end of the day, my total steps were 15, 944!  How motivating!  ...I want to see how many MORE I can do!

My clicker hangs on my keychain and is my "quick memory."  If I eat something when I am not around my tracker, I simply put the number of points I used into my clicker.  When I get home and can track, it helps jog my memory!  "Oh yeah...the ice cream cone..."

My favorite shopping companion!  All foods with unknown POINTS values are calculated with my POINTS Calculator before I decide to buy it!

Move for Good

The Weight-Loss Skill:   Move more, consistently, by recognizing—and enjoying—the many benefits of exercise

The Challenge:  We often see exercise as a necessary evil. As a result, we may easily  become bored with our routine and find it difficult to stick with it, particularly when the scale doesn’t reflect our efforts. Failing to consider the other benefits of exercise—lowered stress, brighter mood, improved sleep, and greater energy, to name a few—makes it more challenging to start or continue moving more.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will learn the many desirable benefits of exercise beyond weight loss, which may provide additional motivation to get moving and stay active. We will learn that activity can, among other perks, engage the mind and spirit and even enrich the community—whether we plant a garden for a neighborhood in need or walk to raise funds for a great cause.

Just Say "NO!" to Saying No

The Weight-Loss Skill: Ditching the diet mind-set and avoiding deprivation.

The Challenge: Although Weight Watchers® is not so much a diet as a healthy lifestyle, many of us still associate any kind of weight-loss plan with deprivation--and deprivation isn’t sustainable, because it can lead to frustration and episodes of overeating.

The Solution: In this week's meeting, we will explore how to make informed food choices using the Weight Watchers Momentum™ Plan, which is a weight-loss and healthy-lifestyle program, not a diet. We’ll discuss how to routinely include our favorite foods—or satisfying substitutes for those foods—while staying in control of our eating. We will learn that when we give up giving up, we’re more likely to see success at the scale.
