Master Your Metabolism

The Weight-Loss Skill:  Understanding how your metabolism works so you can make the most of it

The Challenge:  As a Leader, I’ve heard members make such statements as “I have a slow metabolism,” “My body is in starvation mode,” and “I can’t lose weight because I’m too old.” When we believe these statements, which are inaccurate, it can create confusion and affect our food choices and self-confidence.  It can also give us a built-in excuse for lack of progress and even failure.

The Solution:   In this meeting, we will gain an understanding of how metabolism really works and what we can do to rev it up. Armed with this knowledge, we will be more likely to accept responsibility for our weight-loss efforts and feel more confident in our ability to succeed on the Momentum® plan.

Trick or Treat!

The Weight-Loss Skill: Learning strategies for managing a sweet tooth during Halloween and beyond

The Challenge: Forget the haunted house; the spookiest part of Halloween is the candy fest.  Stores push high-calorie, high-sugar candy (like that 5-pound bag of fun-size chocolate bars), some of which appears exclusively at this time of year (candy corn, anyone?). Many of us, especially the sweets lovers among us, find it nearly impossible to stay on plan with mounds of candy in every corner. What’s more, for some, eating candy may trigger hankerings for sugar that linger long after the ghosts and goblins are stowed away till next year.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will learn strategies for managing sweet temptations during the Halloween season and beyond. We will share ideas about how to enjoy treats in moderation and how to plan for small indulgences in order to stay on track. We will also come to recognize that not all treats are alike and that we can make healthier choices and continue to lose weight. (We can have our fruit and eat it too!)

Halloween starts the Party Season and it’s time to start thinking about what the plan is to enjoy the good times without ending up feeling guilty and defeated come January.

There are 10 weeks to go before January 1st, isn’t that scary? Make sure to come to your meeting whenever you can during those 10 weeks. It’s the key to staying on track!

Celebrate Success

The Weight-Loss Skill: Celebrating and drawing inspiration from successes achieved during Lose For Good®

The Challenge:  People who struggle with their weight often have difficulty acknowledging and accepting their weight-loss achievements. That may be in part because of self-doubt: We, as members, may be haunted by failed weight-loss attempts and believe that this attempt, too, could easily fail—so why celebrate it? We may also downplay the significance of smaller increments of weight loss, overlooking the fact that every pound (or fraction of a pound) lost brings us closer to our ultimate weight goal and merits acknowledgment.

The Solution:  In this meeting, we will help each other acknowledge and celebrate the weight-loss goals we’ve achieved during the Lose For Good® challenge. We’ll also emphasize the positive impact of those achievements on the community, which further reinforces the value of our weight-loss efforts.  Learning to acknowledge and celebrate success will help boost our confidence in our ability to lose weight and our motivation to stay on track.

Make It Easier: Try Something New

The Weight-Loss Skill: Overcoming trickier elements of the plan by using Weight Watchers tools and resources.

The Challenge:  We often talk about how hard it is to lose weight: "Weight loss takes too much time."  "It can be hard to socialize on the plan."  "I’m not good at recognizing portions and calculating POINTS® values." We tend to generalize, believing the entire process is challenging, when in fact it’s usually only a few specific aspects of the process that pose a challenge.

The Solution:   In this meeting, we will identify the trickier elements of staying on plan and will explore the Weight Watchers tools that make it easier. The meeting will give us the opportunity to gripe briefly about what makes weight loss hardest for us! Venting will help validate our feelings (we’re not alone!) and serve as a springboard for finding solutions, including sharing fellow members’ tips and tricks and discovering the Weight Watchers tools that can support our efforts.

Get Wise About SIZE

The Weight-Loss Skill: Downsizing portions to supersize weight loss without going hungry.

The Challenge:   Bigger houses, bigger cars, bigger TVs. In today’s world we’re conditioned to think that bigger is better and that more will make us happy. So it’s not surprising that the same holds true for food and eating: Restaurant meals are two to five times larger than they were in the 1970s* and can be two or even three times a standard portion size. Fast-food menu choices may be supersized at bargain prices.  Yes, things are bigger, all right: As we’ve upsized our portions, we’ve also upsized our pants and dresses.  And we may be so used to eating so much food that we have no idea what an appropriate—or satisfying—portion truly is. Downsize our portions? Why, that can make us feel cheated. Yet portion control is a key strategy for weight-loss success over the long term.
* Portion Distortion

The Solution:   In today’s meeting, we will use the inspiring example of the Salwen family as a basis for asking the central question, What could we get out of eating half our usual portion sizes? We will share strategies for eating half, or at least less than our typical amounts, without going hungry. We will also discuss the benefits of portion control, which go beyond boosting weight loss to building feelings of empowerment and self-confidence.
