Fun Without Food

Socializing with activities instead of food

The Challenge:

As we discussed last week, many of us focus our summer plans with family or friends around meals: "Come over for a barbecue," "Meet me at a restaurant," "Let’s get brunch." It can be hard to train our brain to consider ways to socialize that don’t involve food or drinks. And it can seem equally challenging, even intimidating, to ask our friends and family to get on board with this new way of hanging out.

The Points Plus Solution:
In this meeting, we will explore fun ways to spend time with friends and family that don’t involve eating. The brainstorming process will help us better understand the many opportunities that exist away from the table. Lastly, we will discuss ways to ask the people around us to support this new way of thinking.

Get Fresh!

Eating fruits and vegetables for better health and improved weight loss

The Challenge:

Most of us know that eating fruits and vegetables improves health and weight loss, but eating enough isn’t always easy. And enjoying them, even less so. Why? Top complaints: They seem bland and boring; we are not accustomed to including them; we didn’t grow up eating them—or we ate mostly starchy veggies (e.g., potatoes, peas, corn) plus basics like green beans, apples, oranges, bananas, and iceberg lettuce. It can be harder then, as adults, to take chances and try new fruits and vegetables (leeks? okra? jicama? pluots?). Even those of us who like fruits and vegetables may find our regular picks ho-hum.

The Challenge:

It seems like whenever we hear of a celebrity losing weight (especially their baby weight) we think, "Well, if I had a personal trainer, a personal chef, and a nanny, I’d be able to lose weight too!" It’s easy to get caught up in "if only..." thinking. But very few of us have access to those resources, and even if we did, it wouldn’t make weight loss quick and easy or even guarantee our success. Using "if only..." thinking lets us off the hook for the efforts we’re able to make with the resources we already have.

In this meeting, we will determine what exactly we need for successful weight loss and explore ways, within our means, to make it a reality.
